Poison Ivy manipulates plants and produces a variety of floral poisons and toxins. One of which allows her to manipulate people by making them feel hopelessly attracted to her. Her own blood is toxic.
Origin – Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earth
Pamela Lillian Isley was a botanist from Seattle. She was seduced by Marc LeGrande to assist him in stealing an Egyptian artifact with an ancient herb in it. He was afraid that she knew too much to be let go alive, so he poisoned her with the herb inside the artifact. Fortunately for her, she survived and became immune to toxins and diseases.
Origin – Post-Crisis on Infinite Earth
Poison Ivy’s origins were rewritten after Crisis on Infinite Earth. Pamela Isley is the daughter of wealthy parents; however she was emotionally distant from them. In college she studied in advanced botanical biochemistry. Isley was seduced by her Professor, Floronic Man, who would later become Floronic Man. As an experiment, he injected her with poison, which caused her to transform. Isley became insane due to nearly dying twice of poisoning. The poisonings resulted in Ivy not being able to ever have children, which is why she cares for her plants so much. When Ivy was released she developed mood swings due to what the professor had done to her. When her boyfriend dies in a car accident, she moves to Gotham City.
She took up the name Poison Ivy and held the city hostage with her poisonous spores. Unfortunately for Ivy, this was the same year that Batman arrived in Gotham. He took her down and put her in Arkham Asylum. This encounter sparked Ivy's obsession with Batman because she could not control him. When Batman went to Seattle to gain information about Isley before she became Poison Ivy, he learned that both her parents are dead.
Ivy later reveals that she was only using crime until she could fund a location where she could live with her plants in peace and away from humanity. Ivy eventually achieved this by escaping from Arkham and fleeing to an island near the Caribbean. When she arrived there it was a wasteland, but Ivy would transform it into a beautiful paradise. Ivy was able to live there happily until an American corporation tested their weapons on what they thought was an abandoned island. Ivy survived and returned to Gotham to get her revenge on those responsible. She would once again be stopped by Batman and ended up back in Arkham.
During her time in Arkham she received a message in some flowers that she was going to be broken out by someone that night. Two women named Holly and Eva successfully broke Ivy out and brought her to Floronic Man. This being the first time they had seen each other since Woodrue injected her with poison, Ivy was not happy at all. He made a deal with Ivy; if she gave him a sample of her DNA, he would give her a massive amount of money. He wanted to use Ivy’s DNA to create a child and flood the streets with high-powered marijuana so the child could control the world’s economy on hemp. Batman interrupts the plan and Ivy let Batman go after Floronic Man, while Ivy successfully escapes with all the money.
Ivy would later start showing more human emotion during the earthquake of Gotham. She created a paradise in a park and raised orphans there as if they were her children. Clayface would approach Ivy during the winter to try and strike a deal with her. It involved her producing fruits and vegetables, the orphans would harvest them, and he would sell them to the highest bidder. Ivy declined and instead tries to kill him with her kiss, but Clayface was able to imprison her and the children for 6 months. Batman comes and frees her and they both fight Clayface. Batman allows Ivy to take care of the children until the disaster caused by the earthquake was over. Ivy would later find Harley Quinn nearly murdered by the Joker, she took care of Harley and they became best friends.
Once the city returned to normal the city council wanted Ivy out of the park because of her previous history. They threatened to spray her garden with RC-60 which would kill all the plants, Ivy, and do harm to the children. Ivy still refused, but after accidentally poisoning one of the children, Ivy gives herself up.
Ivy believed that her powers were causing her to kill the orphans she looked after so she went to Batman and asked him to help her reverse her power so she could be human again. It was successful and Isley was once again human, however this was short lived. Hush would soon approach her and convince her to take a serum that would restore her powers. Isley takes the serum and apparently dies because of it.
Poison Ivy comes to believe that her powers are killing the children she had looked after, so she seeks Bruce Wayne's help to reverse her powers and make her a normal human being once more. Soon after, she is convinced by Hush to take another serum to restore her powers and apparently dies in the process. However, when her grave is visited shortly thereafter, it is covered with ivy, creating the impression her death would be short-lived.
Shortly after her death, Poison Ivy is seen in Robinson Park, killing two corrupt cops who killed one of her orphans. Since her death her control over flora has increased, she also appears to have resumed her crusade against the corporate enemies of the environment.
After arriving back from a year-long absence, Batman discovers that Ivy has been feeding people to a giant plant which would digest the victims slowly and painfully. In an unprecedented event, her victims' souls merge with the plant, creating a botanical monster called Harvest, who seeks revenge upon Ivy. With the intervention of Batman, however, she is saved. Ivy is left in critical condition, and the whereabouts of Harvest are unknown.
In Countdown 37, the Piper and the Trickster are hiding out in a greenhouse, picking fruits and vegetables from the plants. They run into Ivy, who is talking to her plants (being told that Piper and Trickster hurt them), she reacts by tying them up in vines with the intention of killing them.
She is then shown to have joined the Injustice League Unlimited and is one of the villains featured in Salvation Run
The cover of DC Universe Special - Justice League of America shows Poison Ivy as a member of Libra's Secret Society of Super Villains
Powers
Since she is immune to all kinds of toxins and poisons, Ivy often uses these as weapons. The very touch of her skin can poison a normal person. She has also developed several toxins which serve for different purposes, including a truth serum and a love potion. She's also able to manipulate people using her special pheromones. Poison Ivy also has complete control over plants, allowing her to control them, create hybrid-like plants, as well as animate plants.
She has a special relationship with plants. She treats them as if they were her children and they respond to her will and command. Also, her expertise as a Bio Chemist has allowed her to develop mutant plants and to bring to life plants that were thought to be extinct.
